The slab bench is a tribute to its’ remarkable natural materials: the bench top is Oregon Myrtle (known to Californians as California Bay Laurel) and is hand planed to maintain its natural feel and shape. The innermost layer of bark was left on the top’s live edge, preserving the rich and varied color of the tree it came from.
The subtly contrasting legs of the bench are soft maple; they were machined flat, then hand planed to their final thickness. To compliment the top, the maple legs also maintain their distinctive live edge. All of the wood for the bench was urban tree rescue sourced from Rose City Lumber.
The bench top and legs are finished with a hand rubbed hard oil-wax to preserve and highlight the dramatic coloring of the wood.
